Example of Action Research

One example of action research that can be conducted in school is to study the effects of implementation of a various teaching strategy. From time to time, teacher may use different teaching methods, such as brainstorming session, lecturing, demonstration and discussion with students. First, teacher need to identify the problem why students cannot score with high marks in some particular subjects. After doing some literature research through reading and researching, teacher will demonstrate various teaching methods to enhance student’s performance. Teacher will observe students response and behavior towards different type of teaching, involve gathering and analyzing the data and doing some evaluation which one is the best and suitable for that particular students. Teacher will discuss it with the other teachers which are the best method for this type of students. Once get the results, teacher will report it and implement the best teaching methods for the future time. This can improve individual’s teaching skills as well as student’s performance in class.

Type Of Action Research

There are four types of action research, which is individual teacher research, collaborative action research, school-wide action research and district wide action research. Individual teacher research focus on single classroom issue. In order to achieve the goals, it needs supports from coach or mentor, access to technology, assistance with data organization and analysis. It may give potential impact on curriculum, instruction and assessment. It may give arise in practice informed by data and information not always being shared. Collaborative action research focus on single classroom or several classrooms with common issue. It needs possible support may from substitute teachers, release time and close link to administration. As individual action research, it also gives potential impact on curriculum, instruction, assessment and policy. It may improve collegiality and formation of partnership. School wide action research focus on school issue, problem, or area of collective interest. Possible support may from school commitment, leadership, communication and external partners. It gives potential to impact school restructuring and change, policy, parent involvement and evaluation in programs. This research can improve collegiality, collaboration and communication, team building, disagreement on process. District-wide action research focus on district issue and organizational structures. Possible support may from district commitment, facilitator, recorder, communication and external partners. It can impact allocation of resources, professional of development activities, organizational structures and policy. Same as school wide action research, it also can improve collegiality, collaboration and communication, team building, disagreement on process and shared vision.

Educational Action Reearch

Educational Action Research is a reflective and systematic educational practice of progressive problem solving involving collecting and analyzing data to see the results may influence quality of teaching whether it can improve strategy, practices and knowledge of teaching and overall quality of the school. This research is carried out within the context of the teacher’s environment and on questions that deal with educational matters. Action research work in a cycle of planning, action, monitoring and reflection. Beginning with monitoring and observation, then we can plan and implement the way or element of solution. Sometimes, it hard to detach one element of the process from another. We are actually reflecting as we are acting. Later, monitoring will take place as action proceeds. However, once that first change is implemented the action research cycle proceeds generally. Actually, the basic cycles involves identifying a general or initial idea. Then finding the actual fact before proceeds a planning. After that, we need to take first action step, then evaluate the results of first action step, amended plan and then take second action step.
